Luke Bryan Says This One ‘Cheesy’ Lyric Almost Kept Him from Recording No. 1 Hit ‘Drunk on You’

Luke Bryan may have had a No. 1 hit in 2012 with “Drunk on You” — but the country star almost passed on recording it due to one “cheesy” line.

Bryan, 50, appeared on The BobbyCast with Bobby Bones earlier this month, and revealed that he almost walked away from the song because of one of its signature lyrics.

“The biggest scare of that song was, ‘You make my speakers go boom boom.’ ‘Is it cheesy? How cheesy is it? How cheesy? Is it cheesy?’” Bryan remembered thinking. “I never considered changing it. I considered it being so cheesy that I may need to back away from it.”

The American Idol judge finally came around to the line, though, after heading out on his Farm Tour and playing a demo of the song. Once he saw everyone happily singing along, he realized he had something special on his hands, regardless of the lyric.

“[At] the afterparties… we would put speakers up at Farm Tour and we would play that demo and I watched everybody in my crew start singing, ‘Girl you make my speakers go boom boom.’ And I went, ‘None of these people seem to have a problem with it.’”

Bryan even joked that people in his inner circle sat him down and told him he had to “let go of this boom boom thing.” Eventually he did, and the song became a major hit, topping the Hot Country charts for two weeks and peaking at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“It was that time where I was trusting my gut, I was trusting my songwriters’ gut, and I was trusting people in the label’s gut,” he said. “You just had a crew of people that… we were firing and it was fun and man, I mean, [that] song really tells a great story.”

Thomas “Bo” Bryan is keeping his head in the game.

The 18-year-old football player and son of country music legend Luke Bryan announced his commitment to play at Georgia on Sunday, Oct. 25, following a standout season as the starting quarterback at Tennessee’s Battle Ground Academy.

The six-foot, 205-pound prospect is a three-star pocket passer in the 2027 cycle, per ESPN rankings. His verbal agreement comes less than a week after he received an offer from Georgia on Oct. 19, his first from a Power 4 program.

Bo is a longtime fan of Georgia despite being raised in Franklin, Tenn. His dad was born and raised in the state, and graduated from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro before moving to Nashville to pursue his music dreams.

“This means a lot to me just because I’ve been a Georgia fan my whole life,” Bo said, per the UGA Wire.

Luke has remained a lifelong Georgia fan and attends games often. His son selected the Bulldogs over offers from Austin Peay, East Tennessee State, North Alabama, UT Martin and others, reported ESPN.

Bo is the No. 141 quarterback in the nation and the No. 70 prospect from Tennessee. He is considered one of the top high school quarterbacks in the region with 2,006 yards passing, 30 touchdowns and three interceptions to date.
