Brunch was awesome. It was a cute little french joint. Very rustic, burning fireplace, wonderful smells. Their brunch special was a great deal. $12 for any entree, unlimited mimosas and coffee. I had the duck confit with poached eggs and hollandaise. It came with roasted potatoes and greens. Delicious. Everyone else's food looked really good. Especially Kimberly's wild mushroom and goat cheese omelet. Yum. If I hadn't been so stuffed from my rich meal, I would have started in on the rest of hers...
Kathleen seemed really to be enjoying her birthday. She received great gifts and cards and plenty of adoring attention. They decided to go to the Bronx Zoo, but since it's a gray New York day, Robert and I felt we would prefer to sit around the house lazily, enjoying the one day that we actually have to spend together, which is very unusual lately since the weekends are his busiest time at work.
So that's the plan. Be lazy and let the food and mimosas settle. Maybe take a nap. It's one of those kinds of days. Perfect for doing nothing.
Posted by Maria at November 21, 2004 02:06 PMYup. Having the same sort of day M.
I enjoy 'a cute little French joint' from time to time myself. No wait.. I prefer them on a large scale. :)
Posted by: Richard at November 21, 2004 02:23 PMAh haaaaa.....French resturant.....the need to 'surrender' to the desire for a nap.
Sorry - it's just one of those 'word association' things everytime I hear about something French.
Posted by: Mad Mikey at November 21, 2004 03:33 PMwhat issue do you take with things French Mike?
Posted by: Richard at November 21, 2004 03:51 PMI'm slightly afraid of goat cheese. the one and only time I ate it, I got extremely ill. it was probably a freak illness that had nothing to do with the cheese (I had fresh tuna that night too, so it may have been undercooked), but now I always associate it with being sick. I develop mental aversions to a lot of foods like that after I've gotten sick after eating them. maybe I'm the only one.
Posted by: girl at November 21, 2004 04:24 PMSame here. I got sick from bad pork chops once and haven't been able to eat it since.

AH! I know just what you mean 'girl'. I had a similar experience with mackerel once. Perhaps that's the reason I avoid eating 'fish'.
Shellfish however is quite another matter.
There's a mahvelous little place along the Cote d'Azur called "Morve du Chien" where you get the most wonderful serving of Coquilles St. Jacques. The help's a trifle bourgeois and it's known for the ploucy American tourist from time to time but no matter. Just look beyond all that. During the day try them (the coquilles darlings NOT the American tourists!) with a nice buttery chardonnay like a Morgeot. One glass will suffice for sightseeing along the beaches and winding your way up the hillsides into the small villages where you can see the idyllic schoolboy busily arranging his package for sale in one shop or another.
However.. "Entourage des salopards" is a charming five star restaurant set in a fortified medieval village named "Gordes" just between the Ventoux and Lubéron Mountain ranges.. It just shouldn't be missed. Réservations récommandés!!!
The help is very solicitious.. So much so that the bus boy met me in the 'lavabos' after I'd finished my Gran Marnier and serviced me never expecting a tip!!
Oh how I adore the French.

Hahaa! Richard you're funny.
Girl, undercooked tuna shouldn't have made you ill if it was fresh. I eat completely raw tuna all the time. Goat cheese, on the other hand, doesn't agree with everyone. You could have an allergy to it, you never know.
It's really good when it's hot on top of raw endive and roasted vegetables. Yum. I have a food fetish today. I don't know what's going on. The only reason I sat down at the computer was to look for a recipe.
Only food that's ever made me violently ill was Dallas BBQ chicken here in the city. UGH. I'll never go there again. The mere mention of the place makes me queasy.
Posted by: Maria at November 21, 2004 05:41 PMwell.. Maria.. small wonder were so ill. The name of the place had the word "Dallas" in it!

The impulse to surrender....
Posted by: Mad Mikey at November 21, 2004 06:40 PMI was the same way with any type of ravioli for a very long time (but I've since gotten over it after discovering how divine the Mezza Luna Ravioli at Carrabba's is) and I still can't stand the smell of Entemann's chocolate chip cookies.
Posted by: girl at November 21, 2004 06:51 PM..."surrender" to Mike???
Posted by: Richard at November 21, 2004 10:14 PMmaria - depends on what grade of tuna she ate. sashimi grade is what is safest to eat (i have eaten lesser grades, completely raw, but I have been eating raw fish for years now, so my system is used to it). Even with sashimi grade, some people have weak stomachs for it.
richard - look at the source. The "hot dogs, hamburgers and Budweiser only" culture cannot see past the nose on their faces.
Not to put down hot dogs, hamburgers and bud. I like all three (prefer yueng ling) but I consider myself very open to the treasures of all other cultures - especially the foods.
Let him fester in his own ignorance. It's his loss to miss out of one of the finest national cuisines in the world (albeit, the portions are always too small for me) ;-)
Yeah nunya - that's exactly the reason.....
It's called HUMOR.
Get some.
Posted by: Mad Mikey at November 22, 2004 02:33 PMsorry if I don't find humor at the expense of someone's race, ethnicity of nationality a very funny subject, especially considering the source in this case.
