The Bush twins may be the "cuter ones" by America's shallow standards, but they are definitely not the "smarter ones!"
Bush daughters make awkward stab at stand-up comedy
NEW YORK (AFP) - President George W. Bush's twin daughters drew as many nervous twitters as laughs with an awkward stab at stand-up comedy before the Republican convention nominating their father for re-election.Jenna and Barbara Bush raised eyebrows with lines such as a jab at their grandmother, former first lady Barbara Bush, for thinking the television series "Sex in the City" was "something married people do, but never talk about."
The 23-year-old college graduates were relentlessly irreverent as they took the podium on the second night of the convention after Hollywood-hunk-turned-California-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites), whose wife is a Democrat.
"Isn't he awesome?" gushed Jenna. "Thanks to him, if one of us ever decides to marry a Democrat, nobody can complain."
Some of the jokes in their prime-time appearance ahead of mother Laura Bush drew laughs, but others fell flat. Television cameras caught Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) stoney-faced.
But the twins ploughed on.
"Jenna and I are really not very political, but we love our Dad too much to stand back and watch from the sidelines. We realized that this would be his last campaign, and we wanted to be a part of it," Barbara said.
"Besides, since we've graduated from college, we're looking around for something to do for the next few years ... kind of like Dad."
Jenna said they were eager to work in the White House but found all the good jobs taken. When at one point she offered political advice "I got an angry call from some guy named Karl," a reference to electoral guru Karl Rove,
Just a few months after getting into hot water for pulling her tongue at journalists while riding in her father's motorcade, Jenna had no qualms about dishing out barbs on national television.
"You know all those times when you were growing up and your parents embarrassed you? Well, this is payback time ... on LIVE TV!!!" she squealed.
President Bush, who spoke to the convention by video from Pennsylvania where he was campaigning, had no reaction to his daughters' crack at humor, telling them only "you make me so very proud.
"I have really enjoyed being on the campaign trail with both of you, it's kind of like the camping trip I promised to take you on," he said, standing stiffly in front of the camera.
Yah right. I'm sure he's real proud to have these two bimbos spouting off at the podium. I'll bet he was contemplating shipping them off to Iraq just then. I'm sure he's real proud that the world gets to see what vapid kids he raised. In comparison to the Heinz-Kerry clan, these people look ridiculous.
Oh, I almost forgot, for more from Jenna and Babs, check out "Ask the Whitehouse" L-O-L ;o)
Yeah, they were goofy but they are only 22. The Kerry girls are 28 and 30, age does wonders for maturity. When I was 22 I was a drunk, stoned, tatooed, Doc Marten wearing college student. I was certainly not the kind of girl my parents were proud of. Luckily, I grew up. So, I shall refrain from throwing too many stones on this one...
Posted by: Rosemary the Queen of All Evil at September 1, 2004 12:55 PMHmm. Well I'm 25, and by the time I was 15 I was working at a bed and breakfast cleaning rooms for extra money. By the time I was 19 I had a steady job in a law firm. I also had a lot of fun, but if you put me up on a podium at the age of 22 to promote my father's bid for presidency, I would have taken it very seriously. Oh yes, also by the age of 22 I had moved all on my own to NYC from a little town and Oregon and got a job at one of the biggest lawfirms in the U.S. I don't think I would have gotten that job if I spoke like the Bush twins did last night. Furthermore, they went to college! What did they do there? They didn't learn anything of value, apparently, because if they had, they would know that the RNC is not the MTV music awards where you stand up on stage and act like a dumbass. Oh well, like father like daughters.
I don't think it was a wise decision to put them up there.
Posted by: Maria at September 1, 2004 01:07 PMI always thought it so weak of people to make fun of people's kids. I felt that way about Chelsea, I felt that way when the MTV crowd surprisingly booed the Kerry girls, and I feel that way now.
Posted by: Gordon the Magnificent at September 1, 2004 02:15 PMThen I would like to know what you would have said if those were John Kerry's girls up there.
Posted by: Maria at September 1, 2004 02:16 PMNothing. Did you see me gloating over the MTV awards?
Posted by: Gordon the Magnificent at September 1, 2004 03:39 PMI don't know what you're referring to. Please provide a link so that I can be educated as to this thing that you so conscientiously and nobly avoided exploiting. (Not that I would ever doubt your capacity to be eminently classy when it comes to criticizing your adversaries).
Posted by: Maria at September 1, 2004 04:19 PMI don't have the link handy but the Kerry girls were booed horribly at the MTV awards when they were trying to convince people to vote for their Dad. It was unpleasant.
Posted by: Rosemary the Queen of All Evil at September 1, 2004 04:38 PMFrom what I read, both the Kerry girls AND the Bush girls were booed. But I don't see how the Kerry girls embarrased themselves or their father.
On the contrary, the girls had a great deal of composure and were quoted:
Vanessa Kerry said, "Despite our differences, we all agree this election and this process are important. And we all agree that all of us are part of a greater American family."
Speaking to CNN afterward, Vanessa Kerry said the booing had "scared" her, but added, "We're fighting for something so strongly, I will go up there and hear the whole arena boo if it means connecting with one person."
That's a far cry from "we're not really very interested in politics, but we hope you vote for our dad!"
The Kerrys weren't acting like two completely immature twits on stage, nor were the Bush twins acting like immature twits at the music awards. So why did they choose to display such immaturity at the Republican National Convention, when they should have been at their most demure and humble composure. So, Gordon, what was the comparison again?
Posted by: Maria at September 1, 2004 04:40 PMOh yeah, and the Bush twins dissing their grandmother? That was so crass.
Posted by: Maria at September 1, 2004 04:53 PMIt's just my opinion, that's all. If you think it's ok to do what you do, then suit yourself.
Posted by: Gordon the Magnificent at September 1, 2004 05:11 PMYou read wrong. I watched it. The Kerry girls were booed. The twins were cheered. Odd, I thought, considering the crowd.
Posted by: Geoffrey at September 1, 2004 06:02 PMI didn't see it. But I read this article and this summary of events. Everything I've read so far indicates that all four of the girls were booed. Apparently, in the case of the Bush twins "MTV's broadcast turned down sounds of the audience during the playing of the video, but the vocal audience could still be heard."
I honestly don't even know what the hell that means or what really happened because like I said, I didn't see it. In the end, I don't really care. My only point was that the twins should have conducted themselves as more mature adults during the RNC speech. Being 22 years old is not an excuse to act like you're 16. I just think it makes them and their dad look bad, that's all. My own opinion.
Posted by: Maria at September 1, 2004 06:56 PMI thought it made them look like young adults, which they are. It doesn't make them look anywhere near as bad as Kerry's daughter did running around showing her tits.
Posted by: Geoffrey at September 1, 2004 07:34 PMOh, and like I said, I did see it. The Kerry's got booed, the twins were cheered.
Posted by: Geoffrey at September 1, 2004 07:35 PM"cuter ones"... if they're the "American standard", I've got a couple of pigs out in the sty that'd make them ol' boys in Crawford raise a pup tent in their Levi's.
Those two piglets in comparison to John Kerry's articulate and beautiful daughters. It's just laughable Maria.
Makes perfect sense the Bush twins (nasty visual) would have to do a comedy routine. We shouldn't expect anything substantive from a member of that family now would we?
Posted by: Richard at September 1, 2004 08:02 PM.. and Maria what you read is accurate. All four were booed. So much for the MTV croud. Ugh.
Posted by: Richard at September 1, 2004 08:04 PMMaria, what you read was untrue. Kerry's daughters were booed, the Twins cheered.
Posted by: Geoffrey at September 1, 2004 08:06 PM... you say "toe MAY' tow", and I say "toe MAH toe" (I do too! :-)
Same old same old.
I wish what the previous poster contends was the case.. it bodes better for the Kerry girls.
Posted by: Richard at September 1, 2004 08:12 PMIt's fact. I saw it. The fact you claim otherwise makes it apparent you didn't.
Lying as usual.
Posted by: Geoffrey at September 1, 2004 08:20 PMI talked to a buddy who was there. All four girls were booed. The general consensus amongt the folks at the awards was it was not a platofmr for politics, so none of the girls presence was appreciated.
Posted by: nunya at September 1, 2004 08:43 PMApparently your "friend" (is this the same friend that knows me personally that you refuse to name?) wasn't there either. The twins weren't "present", so their "prescence" couldn't have been very unappreciated. Not to mention they were cheered during and after their talk.
Posted by: Geoffrey at September 1, 2004 08:46 PMoh for crissakes geoff, get real. really though, i dont care if you don't beleive me, but, the realityis, i called my friend whp happens to live in NY, works for MTV, who was there and discussed this with him. He said the general gist was the booing was for the fact that they turned the VMA into a political platform and the audience really did not appreciate it.
Posted by: nunya at September 1, 2004 09:59 PMI saw it...and all four were booed...it wasn't partisan, it was the idea that MTV awards had to be fucked up by goddamned politics...is nothing sacred?
Bushes daughters are chumps just like their mother and father, just like Republicans in general. Vapid weasels all.
Posted by: cul at September 1, 2004 11:56 PMThat's probably the stupidest thing you've ever said, Cul.
Posted by: Gordon the Magnificent at September 2, 2004 12:00 AMnah, the stupidest thing he may have ever said was "...and I agree with gordon"
nah, the stupidest thing I ever said was,"Oh well, maybe Bush won't be as bad as i think he will..."
Posted by: cul at September 2, 2004 02:11 AMThe kerry's were booed. The twins cheered. You're obviously apply kerry logic. "I was wounded by enemy fire even though there was none."
Posted by: Geoffrey at September 2, 2004 11:01 AMWell what your view is on either instance depends on who you listen to. I think that much is clear.
Posted by: Maria at September 2, 2004 11:22 AMI didn't listen to anyone. I watched it myself. Kerry's started speaking and had to stop because of the jeers. That just didn't happen to the twins.
Posted by: Geoffrey at September 2, 2004 07:32 PMWell Geoffrey, I guess you're the only person whose perception is reliable, since many others who also saw it claim that you're wrong. Who to believe? Hmmm...Geoffrey, the person who has a tendency to be full of shit...?
Posted by: Maria at September 2, 2004 08:00 PMThe only one full of shit is you Maria. Well, your pet Nunya is too.
I think it's funny that the talented and well educated Bush Women intimidate you so much.
Maybe someday you'll be lucky enough to fetch papers and coffee for them too.
Posted by: Gordon the Magnificent at September 2, 2004 08:17 PMMany other people? You mean cul? He's many? Who else were you referring to?
On a side note, what else have I been "full of shit" on?
Posted by: Geoffrey at September 2, 2004 08:21 PMGeoffrey, you are always full of shit.
And do you think Cul is the only person I know who saw the awards? Everyone I've spoken to says all the girls were booed.
I can always tell I've really gotten to Gordon when he starts turning into a frothing, angry, chauvenist pig. The coffee thing is so five minutes ago.
Posted by: Maria at September 2, 2004 08:56 PMYou didn't answer my question. What else have I been full of shit on?
Posted by: Geoffrey at September 2, 2004 08:58 PMno "miscalculating" the geoffrey/gordon paradox. It is always the same old tired jokes just regurgitated.
I love it the "talented" and "well educated" Bush girls. Even you "gordon" cannot be THAt fucking stupid. Well, maybe not...
Posted by: nunya at September 2, 2004 11:08 PM"I can always tell I've really gotten to Gordon when he starts turning into a frothing, angry, chauvenist pig."
How am I being chauvenistic by suggesting your subserviance to women? This is too easy.
Bottom line, like you they grew up with a silver spoon. Unlike you, they are successful and have actually achieved a higher level of education. It irritates you, doesn't it?
Posted by: Gordon the Magnificent at September 2, 2004 11:36 PMGordon, I don't judge people based on the status of their employment. An attorney in a law firm is no more superior than a janitor, with the exception of in their own mind. I don't judge based on what people do for a living, but who they are as a person. Likewise, you could be a rocket scientist, but you would still be an assshole. I could be the president's daughter, but it wouldn't elevate or decrease my worth as a human being or my value as a productive member of society. Just as you could be the president's son instead of a chauvenist internet bully, but you would still be an ignorant asshole.
The fact that I type legal briefs rather than flipping burgers or sailing through college on a boat of privilege is irrelevant to this conversation. While you use your comments as an attempt to belittle and degrade me, your argument doesn't progress, you look like an even bigger shitstick, and you undermine the value of the tasks performed by legal secretaries, administrative assistants and paralegals the world over. Chauvenism is the essence of your motivation to insult me. You may not realize you're doing it because being a chauvenist pig is such a part of who you are, you simply can't help it.
Finally "Bottom line, like you they grew up with a silver spoon. Unlike you, they are successful and have actually achieved a higher level of education. It irritates you, doesn't it?"
I didn't grow up with a silver spoon Gordon. My parents worked very hard for thirty years to go from being highschool kids who didn't know what direction to take in life, to being comfortable. Because you know very little about the particulars of my upbringing, I think you should lay off the assumptions.
As for education, I have never believed that formal education is a prerequisite to intelligence. I know people who graduated college that can't spell or compose a proper sentence. So that's pretty irrelevant.
What irritates me about the Bush twins is the fact that they didn't display any maturity or depth of character in their speech. Which is what I said in the first place. But you are so busy reducing the conversation to an attempt to demean, that you missed that.
Posted by: Maria at September 3, 2004 10:20 AMLike I said, the success of others irritates you. It's the core behind all your hate.
Posted by: Gordon at September 3, 2004 10:50 AMFirst of all, how are the Bush girls successful? They're a couple of airheaded debutantes.
I think you are subconsciously projecting your own insecurities again Gordon. You hate the fact that I'm right about the Bush girls. I'm sure it was really painful to watch them talk like idiots on tv the other night. I'm sure even you felt that girls who had been given such an expensive education should be a little bit more poised and mature in addressing the United States of America. I can see that the sting is still resonating a little and I'm aggravating it.
Posted by: Maria at September 3, 2004 10:57 AMSay what you will Maria, but you're seething with jeolusy aren't you?
Posted by: Gorodn the Magnificent at September 3, 2004 10:59 AMSay what you will Gordon, but you are brimming with self loathing aren't you?
Yes I'm seething with jealousy. I wish I could be as vapid and immature as the Bush twins, on national television. I really envy the press they are getting. I really wish that I had the opportunity to make a fool of myself on such a grand scale.
Posted by: Maria at September 3, 2004 11:23 AM"I really wish that I had the opportunity to make a fool of myself on such a grand scale."
You seem to manage just fine on this blog and several others on a daily basis.
That wasn't a predictable comeback or anything.
Posted by: Maria at September 4, 2004 01:31 AMWhen we start trashing and ridiculing peoples' kids..we've all run out something to say.
Posted by: sandy at September 4, 2004 07:52 AMp.s. I'm heading out the door to the 2nd largest WineFests' in Germany but wanted to clarify my above comment..I'm not wagging my finger at anyone but that is the Momma in me coming out. I never liked it when people would tease Chelsea or poor little Amy Carter and I don't like it now. Bush and Kerrys' kids should be off limits. When I used to make fun of people as a kid my momma would say, "now Sandy, that's somebodys child, brother or sister."
All 4 of these girls are gonna be alright and what they don't know now age and maturity will teach them.
I wouldn't make fun of them. And I never have before on my blog. But they spoke at the RNC, which makes them fair game in my book as far as their speech was concerned. I was specifically referring to their behavior during their speech and I think that's completely fair. I wouldn't pick on them for being the party girls that they are or for how they dress, but I definitely think it's fair to criticize the quality of their speech at the RNC. I was disappointed by the lack of humility and maturity and felt they could have better served their father by taking the occasion seriously.
Posted by: Maria at September 4, 2004 10:24 AMYah right. I'm sure he's real proud to have these two bimbos spouting off at the podium. I'll bet he was contemplating shipping them off to Iraq just then. I'm sure he's real proud that the world gets to see what vapid kids he raised.
Uh huh.
Posted by: Geoffrey at September 4, 2004 01:24 PM"I wouldn't make fun of them."
But I'll dedicate a whole post to it.
Flip flop!
You contadicting yourself again? Yeah, that's as consistent and predictable as ever.
Booing either of the girls or dedicating a post to ridiculing them is simply childish and petty Maria.
There's no justifying it.
Posted by: Gorodn the Magnificent at September 4, 2004 03:57 PM"'I wouldn't make fun of them.' But I'll dedicate a whole post to it."
Learn to read Gordon: Me: "they spoke at the RNC, which makes them fair game in my book as far as their speech was concerned."
Can you say H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E? You guys are the biggest hypocrites in the entire world. You ridicule people to the utmost extent on your site and mine constantly and then you claim some high road when I ridicule the Bush twins!?! As if they are off limits because they are "someone's kids"? You guys are fucking ridiculous. Everyone is "someone's kid." They are grown women who acted like stupid children in front of the entire country. And damn if you're going to tell me that it's "off limits because they're somebody's little girls!" Right! Nothing has ever been off limits as far as you two are concerned in using whatever demeaning tactics you choose whenever you choose to use them and with respect to whomever you wish. You dedicate entire posts to ridiculing others on a regular basis. Including devoting entire entries to implying that I am a big fat whip wielding dominatrix. You guys have some serious hutzpa coming over here and accusing me of behaving in a lowly fashion!!! A real piece of work. Both of you. Most. Dillusional. People. Ever.
Posted by: Maria at September 5, 2004 01:15 PMYou ridicule people to the utmost extent on your site and mine constantly and then you claim some high road when I ridicule the Bush twins!?
High road? When did we claim the high road? We'll shit on anyone. We're just pointing out that you are the hypocrite. You claim the high road with name calling, unfair personal attacks, etc. Then you dedicate a whole post to doing the same thing. What's worse is you then try to defend it. We're calling you out.
You guys have some serious hutzpa coming over here and accusing me of behaving in a lowly fashion!!!
Not at all. We're accusing you of being a hypocrite. Accurately, too.
Posted by: Geoffrey at September 5, 2004 02:02 PM"You claim the high road with name calling, unfair personal attacks, etc. Then you dedicate a whole post to doing the same thing."
Geoffrey, I never took any high road. I demanded that people cease conducting childish tit for tat wars in my comments that never got PAST namecalling. Trying to curb namecalling in my comment section was an effort to put a stop to the overwhelming animosity among my readers that had deteriorated into nothing more than a playground tauntfest.
That is a completely separate issue from what we are talking about here. I never said "and I'll never say another bad thing about anyone" or "everyone needs to be Ms. Manners here." There is no need for you to convolute my meaning in asking people to stop acting like babies in my comment section by trying to force it to have some relation to this post about the Bush twins. You are grasping at straws. As usual.
Posted by: Maria at September 6, 2004 11:29 AMI wasn't just referring to that. I was referring to your stance on the moral high ground card you play whenever possible. "Don't make fun of Rick James", "Don't make fun of my family", "I would never make fun of them.....that makes them fair game as far as their speech is concerned". You went well outside the confines of their speech. There aren't any straws being grasped except by you. You're a hypocrite.
Posted by: Geoffrey at September 6, 2004 11:43 AM"'Don't make fun of Rick James', 'Don't make fun of my family',"
!!! Are you nuts? I never said either of those things, for one thing. For a second thing, you didn't "make fun of Rick James." You came to a thread about his recent death and shit on his grave. What you said went FAR BEYOND making fun. If the Bush twins died, would I say "fuck those stupid bitches, I'm glad they're dead!" NO. You reach to a level of disrespect in MY comments that I have never gone to in yours and which I never reach in my posts. You and Gordon both have a venom and nastiness and penchant for dirtytalk that far exceeds anything here. You cannot claim that these things have a relationship to eachother, my getting upset at you and others for basically coming and taking a shit in my comment section which might even include some sadistic or perverted shit on any given day, and sometimes relating to my family.
Yes, my family. You mentioned that too. "Making fun of my family." My family has not been "made fun of." My family, my sister in particular has been spoken of in a manner that would make my poor grandmother turn over in her grave!!!
Try as you might, Geoffrey, to trivialize the things that I have put my foot down about in the past, this is my website nonetheless. If I find something vile, disgusting, perverted, unusually hateful or venomous, I am going to delete it. And that is my right. Meanwhile, I can go ahead and make fun of whomever I want, or analyze anyone I want in any way that I please. Because first of all, I do not post anything here that is vile, disgusting, perverted, unusually hateful or venomous and by and large, I am making fun. If you don't like my rules about rude, disgusting comments, then find another blog.
But alas, it cannot be compared in any way to this post about the Bush twins.
Posted by: Maria at September 6, 2004 12:23 PMIt's amazing the lengths you go to justifying your hypocrisy. Nothing has been said about your sister that wasn't true. If that makes your grandmother roll over in her grave, that's your sister's fault, not mine.
You speak double-talk and hold yourself to lower standards than you hold those on your side of the fence. It belittles any reasonable argument you occaissionally have. You're intellectually dishonest.
Posted by: Geoffrey at September 6, 2004 01:46 PMI think it's her time of the moon.
Posted by: Gorodn the Magnificent at September 6, 2004 10:59 PM"Nothing has been said about your sister that wasn't true. If that makes your grandmother roll over in her grave, that's your sister's fault, not mine."
That is bullshit. You haven't even seen some of the comments I've deleted! There have been many things said that are not true, as well as many deeply inappropriate suggestions. The fact that my sister is proud of her body and not afraid to show it to the world, does not give anyone the right to degrade her. Especially not at my site.
As far as me being a hypocrite, you can say what you want, but the accusations you're making do not have any relationship to this post, no matter how hard you try. Furthermore, as I've said before, it's my fucking website. I'll do what I want. If you don't like it, take a hike. Discussion closed.
