The American Idol rollercoaster is giving me motion sickness. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad my precious Fantasia was in the top three, but I don't get how she and La Toya were in the bottom three last week and the top three this week. America is schitzo. I'm glad George didn't get eliminated though. He's my second pick.
It amazes me how many people watch this show. Kids and full grown adults alike. Why? We all just buy into this whole silly competition, which in the end, results in something I find kind of repellant, the total commercialization of music to the point where the art & soul gets sucked out of it & people have to compete for their place in the music industry on tv because we so badly need a new 'idol'. But on the other hand, there is something so cool about seeing this group of people, each with such a different presence and voice, singing their hearts out show after show. The ad placement segments are awful & cheesy, but aside from that, more than half way through the third season, I can't help still being interested and enjoying the phenomenon of this silly tv show. (Of course, no one can deny that the audition process is the best part of that show, that is the thing that really gets people hooked so they'll watch what is essentially a bunch of boring shows in the weeks that follow).
Does anyone watch Twenty Four? That show is crazy. I have missed only two episodes (have em on tape but haven't watched em yet) in the three seasons that it has been on. (Started the same time as American Idol, which is part of how I got hooked on both). Those are the only two tv shows I am genuinely devoted to watching, except for maybe Dave Chapelle. Twenty Four has reignited my adoration for Keifer Sutherland. The raging crush I had after The Lost Boys and Young Guns had sort of fizzled out after all these years... He was pretty good in that new Angelina Jolie flick "Taking Lives", though he didn't have a huge part. But as Jack. He is the tough guy of my dreams.
Leave me alone...I know I'm a freak ;o)
Posted by Maria at April 28, 2004 09:28 PM | TrackBackYou are not a freak because I would be one too..24 is a great show! Jason got me hooked on it and I'm so glad that Keifer Sutherland found a venue to act in again...outside of crappy movies, he's so intense and wonderful.
The redhead finally left! I always want them to go but when you watch their damn farewell tape...I always fucking CRY and than I feel bad for them.
Posted by: sandy at April 28, 2004 10:13 PMME TOO! At the end I was like "aw, cute little bugger wasn't he?" It was time though. I was very surprised he wasn't in the bottom last week, so I think justice was done. It definitely was sad though at the end.
Posted by: Maria at April 28, 2004 10:22 PMI really think that alot of voters just "assumed" fantasia and latoya would get alot of votes and gave them to the redhead out of sympathy...truly.
Posted by: sandy at April 28, 2004 11:29 PMShit I keep forgetting to add this..I bought The Lost Boys on DVD a couple of months ago..it was like 6 bucks or something..anyway Ailey and her little girlfriends FELL IN LOVE. They watched that movie like 10 times in a week..they even said the music was cool...they didn't even mind that the movie was kinda old.
Oh and Ailey got her first pair of glasses today, she only has to use them for reading but she's bummed out a little..but she looks so precious.
Oh my god I must have watched that movie a hundred times when I was her age. I love the soundtrack. It's so good. Still love that movie. It never gets old to me. ;o)
Posted by: Maria at April 28, 2004 11:35 PMI had forgotten what a hottie Kiefer was and didn't Julia Roberts leave his ass on the eve of their wedding around that time?
Posted by: sandy at April 28, 2004 11:53 PMYes! I guess he's a bad boy...
Posted by: Maria at April 29, 2004 12:33 AMwoops.. sorry ladies...
I've been busy but wanted to say hello :-)
However...
I watched American Idol the other night (Gloria Estafan was on and each one was doing one of her songs..) I gotta tell ya I thought the talent was marginal at best.
The one I did follow until the season ended is the new "Star Search" hosted by Arsenio Hall (no relation.. ;-) Now there's some serious talent on that show and this "White Bread" kid (foret his name) with blond hair and blue eyes who's about as squeaky clean as they come (and eerily bears an uncanny resemblance to my late brother) won the competition. His vocals are freaking amazing and he does a whole lotta Stevie Wonder's old stuff and he's pure magic.
Naomi Judd's one of the judges and from what little I've seen of American Idol the talent on Star Search is much more accomplished. (What is this thing with singers that make them kinda sing all around a note before they finally land on it?? It's nasty and makes me yearn for vintage Streisand) Their method of singing is like Mariah Carey and her vocal acrobatics. BLEECH.
Between Paula Abdul and Simon what's-his-name I think their little back and forth is tedious. She's goodie two shoes and he's Simon LeGris. It's all too predictable.
Posted by: Richard at April 29, 2004 07:24 PMHey M??
Whaddaya think of the closed-door, no transcript Bush/Cheney testimony today??? Hehe.
Shit's hittin' the fan.
Posted by: Richard at April 29, 2004 07:26 PMRichard I started to respond to you and it turned into such a long tangent, that I decided to turn it into a new thread. It will be posted shortly. ;o)
Posted by: Maria at April 29, 2004 08:34 PMI just got through reading it M.
It's monumental and is so on target I posted my single-word response there. You write with your heart, your head and with eloquence.
Tell your parents they raised a fine woman. Nevermind, I suspect they're aware of that already.
I'm proud to call you "countryman".
