Be My Little Frankenstein

Did anyone watch this scary show, "The Swan"?

I just read this review of it that was pretty accurate.

"If a network wants to do a truly ground-breaking reality show, maybe they should take 16 contestants with the personalities of wallpaper and spend three months transforming them into people who are smarter, funnier and more interesting."

I watched the first episode and it was really, profoundly disturbing, to say the least. And the message it conveys is a big neon sign flashing that says "it's okay if your life is miserable and you are completely emotionally crippled. If you were prettier, you would be happier. And a great and acceptable way of becoming prettier is to submit yourself to plastic surgery and surrender to people who couldn't really care less about your inner well being."

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not condemning plastic surgery for what it is. But one thing that it isn't is a cure for marital problems (especially that one big problem of your spouse being a complete fucking asshole) or other serious psychological issues and distorted body images. This show pretends otherwise.

I watched it and I found it creepy. Didn't they put the girls in therapy to work on self-image or am I remembering that wrong?

They supposedly put them through some therapy, but I can't see how it could have been sufficient, seeing as how there are obviously some really deep rooted issues with some of these girls. In particular, that girl Rachel obviously had lifelong issues where her dad had made her feel inadequate and less than confident and she went on to marry a man who treats her the exact same way. That didn't even seem to be addressed. I was sick when Rachel called home after her surgerys and finally got in touch with her husband who never seemed to be available to take her calls and then he just acted annoyed with her and didn't even ask one time "so how are you feeling?" or "How did it go?" I thought, this girl needs to get out of this dreadfully unsupportive relationship and go through therapy BEFORE she decides to drastically change her appearance! I think that the premise of the show in that sense is downright cruel.

"profoundly disturbing" to say the least M.

I watched as that poor wreck of a girl (Rachel the one who was not chosen) went through all that only to get booted in the ass by the arrogant condescendingly pseudo-British wench. I looked at Neil and said "I'd like to line all those assholes up and slap them across the face".

Also.. by the time they'd finished the job on both those women they looked like versions of one another. Really it was kinda robotic and "Westerwordly".

I wonder if they can fix their damaged egos with plastic?

Ugh.

Actually Rachel was the one who got picked to go on. She was the one with the asshole husband and I was so happy she got through because she will have a chance to go on and win the stupid swan prize or whatever. She needs to dump her stupid husband though. I have that to look forward to.

The girl who lost, Kelly, had a sweet, super supportive boyfriend who she never, ever had sex with but you could tell he sure as hell wanted to, and I was at least given the impression that with her new breast implants, she was already feeling a hell of a lot sexier. So that wasn't so bad, but it still doesn't change the fact that it's such an artificial way of going about improving your life. You know, in the end, if it works for them, so be it. I'm just not sure about how well it will work in the long run. What do I know?

A hundred years from now, the earth will be filled with silicone & plastic.

I saw the end of it. It's amazing what you'll watch when you're stuck in a hotel for 10 days. I actually had a discussion about it with Jillian.

I'm all for plastic surgery if it's what YOU want and will improve your self-esteem. What those women had went beyond plastic surgery, though. If you met either of them, particularly the one that was chosen, you wouldn't recognize them. She became a completely different person. I honestly don't think it would matter how bad I looked, I wouldn't want to lose my identity.

And, off topic, how do you use shoutcast? Is it worth signing up to try?

Yes that one M.

Sorry wrong android. Either way "Kelly" was needy. I got no sense that she was improved by what she underwent..

Also those early interview shots of her made her look as plain as possible - unnecessarily so.

Those shows make the people come across as so dependent. Yuck.

Posted by: Richard at April 10, 2004 09:37 PM

Yes, very dependent. They're just normal looking people. It's OK.

Geoffrey: Yes Launchcast is totally worth signing up for just to try. It's free and it is awesome. You just start by rating songs, artists, albums and genres that you like and it will start playing your picks right away. Sometimes it's annoying because it will play shit you don't want to hear. Just click on "never play again." I have rated something like over 3,000 songs & artists and I am totally hooked.
