Former Mayor of Covington, GA, Allene C. Burton, is arrested for stealing a $4.00 necklace. Yes folks, you read that right. FOUR DOLLARS. Burton served on the Covington City Council for 26 years before winning election as the city's mayor in November 1995.
Burton was also accused of shoplifting in 1997, the year she resigned as mayor.
In that case, Burton was allegedly seen on a Covington Belk security camera placing three pieces of jewelry, valued at $75, in her vest pocket. According to a warrant, Burton admitted to a store manager that she took the jewelry. On the same day that she was served with the warrant, Burton resigned as mayor of Covington, citing a "physical and emotional health crisis."
Now why a grown woman would have a penchant for such cheap-shit jewelery is beyond me. But even more unbelievable is that a former public servant would risk jail time just to get her hands on some. The other thing that strikes me is that she paid for other items, but not the four dollar necklace. That is an almost sure indication of a cleptomaniac. But honestly, I feel bad for her. It sounds like she probably wasn't joking about the emotional health crisis.
